The artist’s statement

Artist’s statement on the expressive characteristics of their artistic practice.

By Pasquale Petrucci

My art can be defined primarily as multifaceted—that is, free from repetitive expressive creations. Indeed, my aesthetic creativity is not limited to oil painting on canvas and photography but extends to various forms of expression: Land Art, Mail Art, artist’s books, and installations. Images documenting these interdisciplinary works can be found on my personal website: https://www.pasqualepetrucci.it/my-storytelling-art/ . Currently, my artistic output includes oil paintings on canvas and photographs of everyday life. My oil painting on canvas is characterized by its multifaceted nature, free from repetitive expressive patterns. I view contemporaneity as a form of expression in constant evolution.

There is no single unifying thread in my compositions of assorted objects, where highly stylized human figures alternate with the inclusion of household items that accompany our daily lives. A rural context is often introduced to integrate the objects with superimposed urban elements, which are necessary to consolidate the link between art and architecture. These are intertwined paths, driven by diverse objectives, that form a constantly evolving mosaic fueled by an incessant quest for expression. The entire body of work unfolds along the paths that have defined my expressive exploration, ranging from my early compositions to the project currently underway, titled “Men and Men.”

The latter focuses on each individual’s freedom to live their life through personal choices that define their personality. The creation of this photographic project on daily life unfolded through a visual exploration of the landscape—spanning city alleyways, country paths, seascapes, historical and religious monuments, and parks, as well as various urban routes that included both central areas and isolated spots on the city’s outskirts.

Photographs captured on the go, possessing the allure of street photography defined by an improvisational vision. “Still-life” compositions developed through the assembly of various objects, with carefully balanced chromatic and structural positioning. Photo-compositions, or photo-stories. Décollage—essentially composed of photographs of advertising posters weathered by the elements—reveals a genuine aesthetic iconography that belongs, by virtue of its origins, to the urban landscape. The informal photographs consist of shots capturing the chromatic remnants of old urban graffiti, featuring imagery characterized by an informal and material quality.
